Commonly called 'dolls,' these traditional Hopi carvings represent the katsinam, the spiritual beings who aid the Hopi in securing water and all the abundant blessings of life. Known to their carvers as 'tihu,' which means doll or small child, the carvings are of great cultural significance. Highlighted in these photographs are the carvers who create the 'new traditional' style of katsina, those preferred by the Hopi themselves.
