As you leave Ray's Tavern in Green River and head west on interstate 70, the best driving decision you can make is to head south on highway 24 before you enter the San Rafael Swell. Old Woman Wash, Crack Canyon and the softly eroded, moon-like badlands west of Hanksville await your exploration. Soon or days after that you leave the relative flat lands and enter the reef where color explodes like fireworks on a darkened night. From its northern reaches in Cathedral Valley the reef ribbons south to the reservoir we know as Powell. It is sliced by dozens of narrow canyons and capped by sensually eroded domes. Watch our for the clay road if it rains. It could render your vehicle stuck and you incurably happy to be there!
