Sacred Evidence is a two word phrase from a multi-sentence English explanation that poet Simon Ortiz once gave me for what the word "Hisatsinom," the Keresan language term that the people of Acoma Pueblo us to refer to "those long ago people who once lived in this area." These two words get at what I hope my photographs are about better than Anasazi, ancestral pueblos or ruins. There's a spirit dwelling here among the geometry of the built environment and the poetry of place, that I'm attempting to express. I've published a book of this work at www.blurb.com. There's a few personalized essays to compliment the photographs and a small collection of poems that friends have let me publish. I consider this book one of my favorite photographic accomplishments. The imagery combines the geometry of the built environment with the natural poetry of place. I feel fortunate to have visited them all before the creation of Bears Ears Monument, which I support, and before the plague of YouTube "explorers" who are exploiting these places for personal monetary gain. They, I detest. Should YOU visit these places, please do so with utmost respect and keep their whereabouts as quiet as you can.
